Dat Dere - Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

A couple of days ago I mentioned the song Dat Dere by Bobby Timmons. I started looking for versions of that song and found this video clip of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers performing Dat Dere in 1961.

I don't usually listen to bop jazz very much but when it has such a great swinging rhythm section like in this video clip, it's a joy. I love the piano solo. I have to start looking into the music of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers to see if I can find more stuff like this. Got any suggestions?

What do you think of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers playing Dat Dere? Does it appeal to you hard core swing music fans as well? Tell me.

check out a drummer named winard harper, he plays very much in the art blakey tradition and his sextet/quintet regularly include many bobby timmons tunes like dat dere, moanin, and this here. Winard's band tours continuously so there is a good chance of actually seeing them live.

Henrik,
This is one of the finest tunes played by Blakey and messengers. I like its redition better then Bobby Timmons' recordings and better then Adderly's version. I am a jazz avid listener and have several versions of this. An interesting version with singing is performed by Rickie Lee Jones. I love it too in her album Pop pop pop. Another track on the same Blackey's album (The big beat) is the Chess Player is also worth exploring. If you liked this try also Hank Mobley's Soul Station album you will adore it.
