The Preacher (Jazzbacillen) - Horace Silver

The song "The Preacher" is written by Horace Silver. In the video clip above The Preacher is played by Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers. The video clip also include the song Doodlin'. I don't listen to a lot a bop but this is my kind of bop (I've mentioned before that also like Silver's tune "Filthy McNasty").

In Sweden "The Preacher" is known as Jazzbacillen (The Jazz Bug). The song became a hit when it was sung by the artist Siw Malmqvist in 1959 with new Swedish lyrics written by Eva Nordström (which I think is a pseudonym).

Below is the Swedish lyrics.

Jazzbacillen

"Crazy Riffin" - Betti Mays, Big Sid Catlett

Here is a video clip from the movie Boy! What a Girl! where Betti Mays sings the song "Crazy Riffin" which is played by Big Sid Catlett's band.

The film "Boy! What a Girl!" is from 1947 and you can hear that the band has bop influences as well as Betti Mays has when she scats. That's bop phrases alright, but the tune still swings. Other jazz musicians as bass player Slam Stewart and drummer Gene Krupa also appears in the movie.

There is a group of dancers called The International Jitterbugs that I've heard is in the film, I haven't seen any clip of them, do you know anything about those dancers? Tell me.

What do you think of this video clip with Betti Mays and Big Sid Catlett's band performing the song "Crazy Riffin"? Tell me.

Dat Dere - Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

A couple of days ago I mentioned the song Dat Dere by Bobby Timmons. I started looking for versions of that song and found this video clip of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers performing Dat Dere in 1961.

I don't usually listen to bop jazz very much but when it has such a great swinging rhythm section like in this video clip, it's a joy. I love the piano solo. I have to start looking into the music of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers to see if I can find more stuff like this. Got any suggestions?

What do you think of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers playing Dat Dere? Does it appeal to you hard core swing music fans as well? Tell me.

Today it's time again for After Work Jazz at Hotel Uppsala (located at Kungsgatan). This time it's the Olle Thunström kvartett that's playing. The band consists of Olle Thunström (tenor saxophone) Daniel Lantz (piano), Niklas Fernqvist (bass) and Ali Djeridi (drums). This evening they will also feature Karl-Martin Almqvist (tenor saxophone).

The band starts at 17.30. There is no entrance fee and you can buy food and drinks while you listen to the band. They will play bop jazz in a Wayne Shorter style but also some jazz standards (like Autumn leaves) and blues.

The photo of Niklas Fernqvist is taken by me at the Nkiru concert and may not be used elsewhere without my permission. Contact me if you want to licence the photo.

Have you been to After Work Jazz before? What do you think? Tell me.

Buba Jazz Band: Concert photos

Anar 'Buba' Tagyzade. Buba Jazz Band. Copyright: Henrik Eriksson. The photo may not be used elsewhere without my permission.

Yesterday Buba Jazz Band played at a concert at Katalin and all that jazz. The concert was arranged by Uppsala Jazz Club. It was a really good concert and coming from a background as a swing dj I was surprised how much I liked the bop jazz songs. Excellent jazz musicians!

These are some of the songs they played: "Bud Powell" by Chick Corea, "West Coast Blues" by Wes Montgomery, "Foot Prints" by Wayne Shorter, "Blue Monk" by Thelonious Monk, "Grooving High" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Watermelon man" by Herbie Hancock, "Resolution" by John Coltrane, "It's A Reaggy Waltz" by Dave Brubeck, an uptempo version of "Yesterdays" by Jerome Kern, "Moanin'" by Bobby Timmons as well as "Work Song" and "Oleo".

Buba Jazz Band ended the concert with "When My Sugar Walks Down The Street" by Nat King Cole. The songs they played reminded me of one of my favorite albums: In Blue by Karrin Allyson which has both "West Coast Blues" and "Moanin'".

Buba Jazz Band: Concert at Katalin tomorrow

Upcoming concert

Tomorrow it's time for Buba Jazz Band to play at a concert at Katalin and all that jazz. The concert is arranged by Uppsala Jazz Club.

Buba Jazz Band. Promotion picture.Buba Jazz Band consists of Anar "Buba" Tagyzade (song), Anders Ekholm (saxophone), Max Åhman (guitar), Christian Paulin (bass) and Janne Kullhammar (drums).

I haven't heard them before. The program says that they will play songs of Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane mixed together with jazz standards. I've read that Anar "Buba" Tagyzade is good at scatting. I guess it will be a lot of bop at this concert.

Have you heard them? What do you think of them? Tell me.
