Easy virtue - Let's misbehave

While looking for versions of Cole Porter's song "Let's Misbehave" I stumbled across the film Easy Virtue that was released last year. "Let's misbehave" is the tagline of the movie and the song is also included in the film.

Easy Virtue is set in England in the early 1930's, where a young man marries an American which is not approved by his mother. The main characters are played by Jessica Biel, Ben Barnes, Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth.

There is also a soundtrack from Easy Virtue available.

I think the film look charming and would like to see it. Has anyone got it?

"Anything goes" at Grand

Anything Goes at Grand

You can see the musical Anything Goes at Grand tonight and on Sunday. The poster above has all the details.

Anything Goes was first performed in 1934 and the musical has music and lyrics by Cole Porter and is based on a book by P.G. Wodehouse (who also wrote the books about Jeeves and Wooster).

Some famous jazz songs from this musical is played at swing dances now and then: Anything Goes (of course) and I Get A Kick Out Of You. One Broadway version included the song Lets Misbehave.

Hey Mr Jesse! It's April!

Hey dear readers! I hope you have caught the latest Hey Mr Jesse podcast, the April edition.

As usual I'm very eager to listen to it, but slow to announce it on the blog. But by now you regular readers should know that the podcast really is worth listening to as fast as possible.

Download Hey Mr Jesse April 2008 podcast (~50 mb, MP3)
Shownotes for Hey Mr Jesse April 2008 podcast.

The podcast features a great interview with singer Catherine Russell. Maureen Bonnefin tipped the dynamic duo about a band I've been thinking about blogging about for while: The Stolen Sweets. I enjoyed one of Jesse Miner's recent finds: a wild jam session version of "Honeysuckle Rose" with Roy Eldridge and Mel Tormé among others.

I wrote to Jesse and Manu with some comments about the March show:

Jesse, during the last show your instinct were completly right about "Kick it", it was first done by Anita O'day and Gene Krupa. I play that version all the time but now I alternate it with the Lannie Garrett version.

Great to hear some music by Banu Gibson on the show, I love her voice.

If you look at her discography on her website there is actually a great album missing. It's called "Jazz Baby" which was first released in 1983 and then rereleased on cd in 1995.

I guess Jazz Baby is kind of hard to find, but if you see it you should get it right away. The album has a great version of Heebie Jeebies (which was made popular by the Boswell Sisters) and also Lets Misbehave. I've loved Lets Misbehave ever since I saw Christopher Walken dancing to it in the movie Pennies from Heaven.

One last tip: If you want to check out some more swingin' trad jazz, take a look at "The Hot Jazz Band" from Hungary. I recommend the album "20. Jubileum" which has "Don't be that way", "Swing That Music" and two killer versions of "I've found a new baby".

Lets Misbehave with Christopher Walken in Pennies from Heaven

I was inspired by MaryAnne's (ysabellabrave's) singing of Let's Misbehave at YouTube, so I started looking around after other versions of that jazz song. It didn't take long before I found a video clip of Christopher Walken tap dancing in the movie Pennies from Heaven.

Christopher Walken really shows off what it means to misbehave. His tap dancing is real but he mimes to the song which is really performed by Irving Aaronson and His Commanders. "Let's Misbehave" is written by Cole Porter. The film Pennies from Heaven is from 1981 and is directed by Steve Martin.

If you want to see more of Christopher Walken dancing, you should see him in the music video for Fatboy Slims song Weapon Of Choice.

MaryAnne (ysabellabrave) sings Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love) at YouTube

MaryAnne (ysabellabrave) sings the jazz standard Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love) which was made popular by Billie Holiday. Wow! You must check this out!

MaryAnne is just amazing. It's easy to fall in love with her voice and her performance. She has got a sparkling and bubbly personality and a great sense of humour. She seems to have a great time and so does all people that watch her video clips. She makes me smile. If you haven't got a smile on your face after watching Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love), you should see a doctor (seriously!).

Ysabellabraves videos is very popular on YouTube, she got almost 20000 subscribers to her video channel! She sings a lot of swinging jazz and also some bluesy torch songs. MaryAnne sings other music styles as well.

Indiemusicman has a long interview with her: Ysabellabrave Talks Back. Another interview with MaryAnne is done by Robert Paul Reyes.

My favorite songs by MaryAnne:
