Top Shelf Jazz: Nagasaki

Top Shelf Jazz is a jazz band from Great Britain that has the tag line "fine purveyors of filthy swing".

Top Shelf Jazz plays music from the 1920's and 1930's and they also write their own songs in a 1920's style. They seem to have a great sense of humour, just take a look at the video clip above where Top Shelf Jazz perform the song Nagasaki.

I haven't heard Nagasaki played like this before, there's something special about it, I like it. A special bonus is that the band features a tap dancer, Josephine Shaker.

"Anything goes" at Grand

You can see the musical Anything Goes at Grand tonight and on Sunday. The poster above has all the details.

Anything Goes was first performed in 1934 and the musical has music and lyrics by Cole Porter and is based on a book by P.G. Wodehouse (who also wrote the books about Jeeves and Wooster).

Some famous jazz songs from this musical is played at swing dances now and then: Anything Goes (of course) and I Get A Kick Out Of You. One Broadway version included the song Lets Misbehave.

Wooster and Jeeves sings Minnie the Moocher

During the past weekend I was once again reminded of the excellent tv series Jeeves & Wooster. So what could be better than to show you a clip from the very first episode of Jeeves & Wooster. Here is Bertie Wooster playing the song Minnie The Moocher and Jeeves reluctantly helps him with the call and response part: Ho-de-ho-de-ho and Te-de-he-de-he. Hilarious if you ask me. Hihi.
