Hey Mr Jesse Feb: Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers

Hey Mr Jesse February 2009 Podcast. Copyright: Henrik Eriksson. The photo may not be published elsewhere without written permission.

The February show of the podcast Hey Mister Jesse has just been released.

Hey Mr Jesse is a great monthly podcast where the swing djs Jesse Miner and Manu 'Spuds' Smith talk about swingin' music that matters to dancers.

Download the February 2009 episode of Hey Mister Jesse. (~50 MB, mp3)

As usual I wrote in to the show with some music tips, I wrote:

My favorite local jump blues and rhythm 'n' blues band, Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers, has just released their second album called "Turn it up".

I like that Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers have written some more songs of their own, like the title track "Turn it Up". My favorite track is their version of "April in Arkansas".

I just love that call and response between singer Anders Söderberg and the guest artists on that track, the sisters Greta, Stella and Sunniva Bondesson. They have their own group called
Baskery.
Mr Jesse played their version of "April in Arkansas" and also talked about their video for the song Chicago Boogie.

My other music tip (that didn't make it to the show):

I'd like to recommend the album "The Jive Is Jumpin': RCA and Bluebird Vocal Groups 1939-1952" (which I got to know about thanks to my friend, the fabulous Miss V.)

This is a great album for anyone who likes vocal groups that swing.

The album has groups as Cats and the Fiddle, The Four Clefs and The Delta Rhythm Boys.

The Four Clefs do a great song called "I Like Pie, I Like Cake" and I like all the Delta Rhythm Boys' songs: One O'clock Jump, I Never Get Out of This World Alive and Take The A-Train.

That version of
Take The A-Train was used in a tv documentary about The Herräng Dance Camp called "Swingen anfaller" ("The swing is attacking").

Spuds has for a long time promised to make "theme music" for my contributions to the show, and in this episode it happend. Jesse commented that he thought Spuds must have worn Lederhosen and had a beer in his hand while composing it. I agree with Jesse, this what I call oompa-oompa-music. Thank you Spuds!

Take a look at what else is in the show: read the show notes for Hey Mister Jesse February 2009.

Release party: Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers: Turn it up

Release party at Katalin. Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers. Copyright: Henrik Eriksson. The photo may not be published elsewhere without written permission.

Last Saturday the rhythm & blues band Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers had a release party at Katalin to celebrate their new cd Turn It Up.

They played songs from the album, great jump blues as always. What I really like is the fact that the band has written some new songs.

You can buy Turn It Up from their label: Heptown Records.

I only had time to see their first set since I had to hurry back to prepare for the swing night and the vintage fashion show at Grand.

I also didn't have time to pick up the actual cd, a pity since I was really curious about what the booklet inside looked like. I photographed the pictures that is inside, the photos where taken when Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers played at Parksnäckan in June.

Swing i Swaben

Swing i Swaben

This weekend, starting tomorrow Friday, there will be an event called Swing i Swaben.

Good bands, social dancing, dance classes and all sorts of fun.

This announcement comes a little bit late, but if you're a spontaneous person you still have time to join the fun. I wish I could be there. Some of my friends will be there: Emelie & Rebecka Decavita will teach lindy hop and Trina Dobbs (with her company Jigwalk) will sell vintage style shoes.

Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers will play rhythm & blues tonight at Parksnäckan. The band invites the dancers to join them on the stage!

The concert starts at 19:30 and costs 90 kr.

I took the picture above last year when they also performed at Parksnäckan. You can find the picture on their band poster. Since then they have a new piano player, Fredrik Hammarström (to the far right) has left and Kalle Sjölin has replaced him.

Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers - Chicago boogie

Here is a music video featuring Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers playing Chicago boogie.

Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers is a popular rhythm & blues band from Uppsala. The video was shot at Grand with a lot of dancers from Swingkatten. You might want to look at how the video shoot looked like in November last year.

If you want to dance to them, you can do that in Stockholm May 17th at Swedish Swing Society (the dance club, not the band).

Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers: Photos from Katalin

A week ago I saw the rhythm & blues band Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers at Katalin & All That Jazz in Uppsala.

They had good solid energy as always. You can depend on that. After being used to hearing Jimmy Witherspoons version of Good Rockin' Tonight, it's refreshing to hear the band's arrangement of the song.

One girl on the dance floor reminded me of a song by Candye Kane: "Crazy Little Thing".

According to Sweet Emma's website they will record some tunes during the spring and I look forward to their next album. In the mean time you can support the band by buying their first cd: "More".

Last Sunday Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers shot a music video at Grand. Along with the band there were a lot of dancers from Swingkatten dressed up in the style of the 1940's and 1950's.

Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers is a rhythm & blues band from Uppsala that also plays jump blues. They are collecting material for their second album that hopefully will be out sometime next year.

Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers will play tonight at Pub 19 in Uppsala at 21 o'clock. If you have the opportunity, you should see them.

Kulturnatten in Uppsala/ Cultural night

Tonight it's "Kulturnatten" in Uppsala, which means "The Culture Night". Parksnäckan: Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers

Tomorrow Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers will play at Parksnäckan in Uppsala at 19:30 (50 kr). They are a good rhythm & blues band that has a touch of swing. The band invites you to join them on the stage and dance socially. Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers played at Parksnäckan last summer and it was a success.

This is the last big thing before everyone disappears for their summer vacations and all swing activities moves to the Herräng Dance Camp. Why not come down tomorrow and share your summer plans?

You can read at long article about the band in Uppsalatidningen nr 25 (pdf, 8 MB) at page 24 (in swedish).

BTW, talking about Herräng Dance Camp, I think Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers could be a great live band there in the first weeks when there are a lot of boogie woogie dancers there. I think they would really enjoy the music and the energy.

Royal Crown Revue: Concert photos

Royal Crown Revue at Debaser concert in Stockholm. Copyright: Henrik Eriksson. The photo may not be used elsewhere without my permission.

Royal Crown Revue played yesterday at Debaser. They played good neo swing with a lot of energy. A very professional and entertaining band with very talented musicians. I had a good dance with M. When the band played the song Harlem Nocturne there were even a little burlesque number with three girls from Stockholm.

I went to the concert with members of the rhythm & blues band Sweet Emma & The Mood Swingers, who by the way will play at Stampen in Stockholm tonight. A lot of the audience were also into vintage fashion and dressed sharply, they were really good looking. Very nice!
